What Christmas traditions do you hold dear? Maybe you always give a certain gift, bake a special dessert, or buy a specific kind of tree. For many of us, these rituals are what make the Christmas season special, and it’s hard to feel festive without them.

But for many of us, merging Christmas traditions can be a challenge when we get married. Now your real Christmas tree, white lights, and “Happy Birthday, Jesus” cake are being threatened by an artificial tree, covered in coloured lights, and Christmas cookies. Merging traditions requires patience and love!

If you and your spouse are trying to sort through this December dilemma, let me encourage you to make your own traditions. Instead of disagreeing over whether or not the light up reindeer gets to live in the front yard, find something that’s new for you both to adopt (a light up nativity scene, perhaps?).

To create your own traditions, take the best of what you both grew up with. Filter them through the lens of truth, and adopt those that glorify the gift of Jesus.

In all the planning, honour your spouse above yourself and seek harmony. Here are 3 attitudes to adopt:

Don’t be easily offended!

We all love our traditions, but don’t be offended if yours doesn’t make the cut. Jesus was still born as Saviour of the world whether or not you open a gift or two the night of Christmas Eve.

Be willing to cooperate out of love.

We get to celebrate Christmas because of Christ’s love for us. Put this gift into practice by loving your spouse.

Keep things simple.

The fewer items or traditions, the more money you’ll save! Don’t try to be extravagant or excessive.

Keep things simple. Don’t break the bank in an effort to celebrate Christmas. Overspending will just create stress – and it’s contrary to what Christ desires in stewards. So, find ways to build traditions. Here’s a few examples:

Pick a day to decorate and begin advent readings.
Light advent candles.
Play and sing carols.
Read or listen to Christmas books and stories.
Drive around and look at Christmas lights.
Attend community concerts.
Set up your own nativity scene.
Put a Happy Birthday Jesus banner in your front window
Bake cut-out cookies and a Happy Birthday Jesus cake.

This holiday season, start a new tradition of generosity and faithfulness in your family. In a world that says “I need it all,” help your loved ones to say “God owns it all.”

Now is a good time to think about what Christmas gifts are necessary for friends and family and how much to spend on each person. Are there better ways of showing how much we care for them?

May you have a great time celebrating Christmas with friends and family.

Many people take out top up mortgage loans on their home. Common reasons are to pay for house renovations, repairs and maintenance, installing insulation and solar panels, buying a car or paying off credit card debt.

Understanding top up mortgages

If you paid $400,000 for your home ten years ago and borrowed $320,000, your equity when you purchased the home was the $80,000 deposit you paid. If your home has now risen to $800,000 in value and you have paid $120,000 off your mortgage, your equity in your home is now $600,000. Most lenders will allow you to borrow against your equity, taking into account what you still owe on your mortgage and how much income you earn.

Your increase in equity in your home makes it easy to get another loan. However, the increase in equity is often used for unwise purchases, like a car, a holiday, renovations that don’t add value to your home, or paying off a credit card but not addressing your credit card spending. It is easy money, but the amount of extra interest you pay is significant.

What is a top up loan?

It is secured against the equity in your home.

It is an additional loan to your primary mortgage, which means additional loan payments to meet each week.

Wise stewardship for renovations

Many people think that when they do significant renovations to their home, its value will increase in recognition of the money they have spent on it. However, extensive kitchen and bathrooms will probably add little value to your home. That’s because the work done is mostly catching up on deferred maintenance. The same principle applies to replacing your roof or other significant repairs needed.

If you are planning to do work on your home:

First, determine if you can afford this project and how quickly it needs to be done. A key financial principle is that the renovation will cost you less if you have saved up the money before you start the renovation.

Establish a budget for what the total renovation will cost. Estimate your debt payments divided by your monthly income to determine how much you can afford. Otherwise, abandon the idea of using any type of top up loan, and wait until you have saved enough to pay cash or can manage with a smaller loan.

If your roof is leaking, check the cost of making short-term repairs to give you more time to save up more for the full cost of replacing the roof.

Investments that may add value to your home include:

Installing or adding additional insulation

Installing double glazing

Installing solar panels and potentially a battery

Adding new rooms

You need to think about these investments from a cost-benefit basis. That means calculating what the project will cost and how much your home will increase in value. Insulation and solar panels will reduce your energy cost but is the benefit higher than the cost? Borrowing money to pay for these investments adds to the total cost, so may reduce the financial benefits. Even if you have cash to make these investments, there is still a cost to you. That’s because when you use your savings, you are reducing the amount of interest you would earn if you didn’t invest in the home improvement.

Suggested steps for major renovations

Get a valuation done and an estimate for how much the renovations will add to the value of your home.

Calculate the equity you have in your home.

Get a solid estimate of renovation costs.

Review your budget to confirm what you can afford to pay.

Consider the following:

Can you realistically manage both payments—not just today but in years to come?

Have you thought through the “what-ifs” that might impact your income

Do you have a solid emergency fund?

Do you have the ability to pay off the loan faster to reduce the amount of interest you pay?

Try out the calculators on the Crown and Sorted websites to see how much a top up loan will cost you.

Consider the times, pray, and seek wise counsel. If you’re married, make sure you are united in the decision. Ask God for wisdom; He gives it generously without reproach.

“A house is built by wisdom and becomes strong through good sense.
Through knowledge its rooms are filled with all sorts precious and riches and valuables.” Proverbs 24:3–4 (NLT)

There are many misconceptions and myths about money. Many are completely untrue, but some need to be seen through the lens of a faithful, biblical steward. Here are the top six money myths and a biblical perspective.

Myth 1 – Investing is the same as gambling, so as a Christian I shouldn’t invest.

Investing is not unscriptural. In the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25, each man receives according to their abilities and is directed to manage their portions well. Each steward was then rewarded or punished based on how he used the money given to him.

Investing is also different than gambling. When you gamble, someone else has to lose in order for you to win. It’s the ultimate get-rich-quick scheme that preys on the poor and motivated by greed and covetousness.

An important distinguisher is between investment performance and investment purpose. Performance will vary based on our response to constantly changing factors beyond our control. Increased knowledge and discipline should lead to increased skill and better investment performance.

Investment purpose is a matter of intent. As you learn to invest money according to God’s principles, you’ll find that God will increase your opportunity to help other people. The true purpose of godly investing is to increase your assets so you can serve God more fully. If you are simply multiplying your money and storing your assets without a purpose, you’ll be guilty of hoarding, like the rich fool in Luke 12.

Myth 2 – I don’t need a savings account because I have a credit card.

This is a surefire way to get into debt. A savings account is crucial because you can’t always plan for emergencies and the unexpected in life. Instead of charging unexpected bills such as car repairs and home improvements on your credit card, dip into your savings and avoid debt altogether. The Bible doesn’t prohibit borrowing, but it does discourage it.

Myth 3 – I don’t need to pay my credit card off in full every month because I am building my credit.

A very common myth is that credit card companies want to see your ability to pay off balances steadily and over time. But this doesn’t do anything for your credit score! It just prolongs the amount of time you’re in debt and the amount of interest you are paying. If you use a credit card for cash back rewards or airline miles points, pay it off in full every single month. Commit to not be in debt, even if it’s for a short period of time.

Myth 4 – Buying a house is better than renting.

When you buy a house you are investing in a property that should increase in value over time. But for some people, renting may be a better option. This could be for a variety of reasons:
• if you expect to move in the near future,
• if you have a busy lifestyle that prevents you from taking care of home maintenance and landscaping,
• if you don’t have enough money to make a sufficient deposit payment on a house, and
• if you don’t have enough income to pay your mortgage off in less than 30 years.

Once you have a mortgage, it increases your access to debt. Some people borrow more against their house as it increases in value. While that may be cheaper debt for financing purchases, the additional interest you pay is significant.

The most common complaint about renting is that you’re just “throwing away money”. However, that doesn’t recognise the costs the landlord faces for rates, insurance, repairs and maintenance. Key factors in working out whether home ownership is better than renting are:

• how long you take to pay off your housing debt
• how much house prices increase compared with your income

Look online for rent vs buy calculators to see what the best option for you is.

Myth 5 – I don’t earn enough money to have a budget.

You should have a budget no matter how much money you earn. But if you live from one pay to the next or find that money is tight, it is vital for you to stick to a budget. Recording your spending allows you to know exactly where all your money is going so you can control it, instead of it controlling you.

Myth 6 – I’m young so I don’t need to worry about saving for retirement yet. OR I’m old so it’s too late for me to start saving for retirement.

Neither of these myths could be further from the truth. If you’re young, now is the most important time to start planning and saving for retirement. Compound interest is a beautiful thing that works for you…if you give it time.

And it’s never too late to start saving for retirement. It would be better to have something saved for retirement than nothing at all. Even if you can live on New Zealand Superannuation alone, when you have savings, you can leave an inheritance for family or a gift to your church or ministry. Stewardship is about managing your life in a way that gives you the freedom to do what God has called you to. If you’re stressed or anxious about money, surrender your circumstances to the Lord and ask Him for direction.

Giving is sometimes described as a two-sided coin. Side one is the obligation for Christians to be generous. This obligation of generosity flows out of God’s ownership of all things.

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for He founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters” (Psalm 24:1-2).

Since He is the owner, we are the managers. “Moreover, it is required of stewards that a man should be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2). We have an exciting obligation to invest our Master’s resources in things that touch His heart.

But it is side two of the coin that we may miss entirely: the opportunity of generosity.

For many Christians, giving is limited by our understanding of God’s Law, with the focus on “How much am I expected to give?”

Yet the Bible says our giving should flow freely from our share in God’s grace, with the focus on “How much more may I give?” Indeed, Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). How can this be? Let’s examine the benefits of generosity.

Understanding
First, generous givers gain a deeper understanding of God’s grace and nature. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8).

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for our sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9).

Randy Alcorn wrote, “Gaze upon Christ long enough and you’ll become a giver. Give long enough and you will become more like Christ.”

Joy
Second, generous givers experience joy through giving. “We want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity” (2 Corinthians 8:1-2).

Freedom
Third, generous givers experience freedom through giving. “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money” (Matthew 6:24).

The paradox of wealth is that the more you have, the less free you are. This is proved true by the wealthiest king in the Bible, Solomon: “The sleep of a labourer is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep” (Ecclesiastes 5:12).

This also is proved true by the one of the wealthiest men in America. John D. Rockefeller said, “I have made millions, but they have brought me no happiness.” Christian financial expert Ron Blue said, “The amount of money you have has nothing to do with financial security or contentment. The secret to financial freedom and joy is directly linked to one thing: the willingness to be generous with what you have.”

Purpose
Fourth, generous givers experience purpose through giving. “You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God” (2 Corinthians 9:11).

Grace-centred giving gives us a higher purpose for managing our resources. We understand that God raises our income not to raise our standard of living but to raise our standard of giving.

Rewards
Finally, generous givers reap eternal rewards through giving. Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21).

Jesus is not against investments…just bad ones. Our giving on earth impacts our experience in heaven. Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.” Let’s make sure our lives experience God’s grace, joy, reward, freedom, and purpose through grace-inspired generosity.

Are you serving your husband, your wife, your children, your boss, your family, your neighbour or others in your church? If so, don’t begrudge this as a burden. You are actually blessed. These are opportunities for you to grow and experience the joy and satisfaction of life. Jesus himself said that he did not come to be served but to serve. He fulfilled His purpose on earth in the same way. In fact, when asked who was the greatest among the disciples, Jesus made it clear that was the one who serves.

So today, thank God for all those you are called upon to serve. They are giving you the privilege of being filled to the full measure of Christ. Show appreciation for them.
Cash is not king. Becoming a millionaire is not an appropriate life purpose. The Bible makes a clear distinction in Matthew 6:24:

“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (NLT)

Serving money means we allow it to control our decisions, our direction, even our life purpose. As Christians, we must not allow money to usurp God’s leading and control our daily decisions.[/info_list_item][info_list_item list_title=”Lesson Two: We do not own anything” icon_type=”custom” icon_img=”id^283|url^https://crown.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Crown-Icon.png|caption^null|alt^null|title^Crown-Icon|description^null”]

We are not owners of anything; we are temporary trustees of God’s property.

Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.
God gives us two directives.

Take care of our families

Paul in his letter to the Corinthian church states “… after all, children don’t provide for their parents. Rather parents provide for their children.” 2 Cor 12:14 (NLT)

Honour Him by giving.

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.” Proverbs 3:9 (NLT)

These are not contradictory; rather, they are ways in which we reflect our obedience to God who charged us with caring for our family and others who are in need.[/info_list_item][/info_list]

It is never too late for parents to begin teaching their children about finances, particularly God’s principles of handling money.

If parents find that their grown children are having financial difficulties, this may be a good opportunity to help them get good counsel. Financially helping your adult children should be contingent on them establishing a workable budget and seeking advice on how implement it.

Parents usually have the greatest motives for helping their children, but financial help sometimes may encourage them to be dependent on the parents rather than on God. If God is trying to teach the children discipline and parents step in, the children may have to go through it all over again.

There is nothing wrong with helping adult children if they are truly in need. If their income is adequate and it is being mismanaged they need to learn how to manage their finances more wisely.

Parents can have a major impact on the fortunes of their children by assisting them with the purchase of a home. Often times the children can make payments a mortgage loan requires, but they have difficulty meeting the down payment and the many costs involved with house purchase.

A way for parents to help their children purchase a home is to give them money toward the deposit. Most banks demand that this help be in the form of a gift, not a loan. Helping your children pay their mortgage off more quickly may save them thousands of dollars and is a great investment opportunity if parents have surplus funds available. Interest rates are higher if the purchaser has less than a 20% deposit.

Parents will however need wisdom and discernment. There is nothing unscriptural about helping adult children purchase homes, but parents have to weigh the personalities, abilities, and attitudes of their children to ensure that they do not spoil the children. It is optimal for every family to have a debt-free home; so, helping adult children purchase a home can be a great blessing to them if it enables them to become debt free more quickly.

It is important to be sure that they are not trying to control their children’s lives. If the adult child is a married daughter, parents should be careful not to usurp her husband’s authority. If stepping in will cause the son-in-law to feel that he is an inadequate provider, then parents may need to back away.

They key to helping our children financially is finding ways of helping them to become financially free, since budget stress can be a major factor in marriage breakdown. While caution is required, financial help now may be much better than a larger inheritance later. Plenty to think and pray about.

The 40-hour week (paid hours including overtime) remains the average for males in full-time work in Australia and New Zealand.

For females in full time work the average is around 37 – 38 hours while the average for part-time workers in 20 hours a week. These survey numbers only covered paid hours and we know many people on salaries work more than the hours they are nominally paid for. We also have an increasing proportion of the working population now working for themselves (self-employed) and often working much longer hours than these.

Over our working life time these can add up to a substantial number of hours we spend at work. But for how many people does the job come some degree of dissatisfaction. Perhaps no statistic demonstrates dissatisfaction more than job-hopping tendencies and the growing extent to which people are changing careers as they change jobs, hoping to find something that they find more fulfilling.

To find satisfaction in our work and to be placed in a position where God can prosper our work, we first need to understand what Scripture teaches about work in general, as well as the responsibilities of both employer and employee.

From the beginning, God instituted work.

“Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15).

The very first thing the Lord did with Adam was to put him to work for his own benefit. It was not a curse. However, after the fall of Adam, work was included in the curse and was made more difficult. Work is so important to our daily lives that God commanded us to, “work six days” (Exodus 34:21).

In the New Testament, Paul was even more direct concerning work: “If anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either” (2 Thessalonians 3:10). God’s Word implies that there is dignity in all types of work. It does not elevate one honest profession above another. Jobs are not merely tasks whereby workers can earn money; they are also a means by which workers can use their talents and abilities to develop character—godly character.

God’s part

The Word of God reveals three specific responsibilities that God has in connection with work.

1. God gives talents and skills. “Every skillful person in whom the Lord has put a skill and understanding to know how to perform all the work” (Exodus 36:1). God has given each worker unique skills and abilities. It is not a matter of one person being better than another; it is simply a matter of having received different abilities.

2. God gives success. “The Lord was with Joseph, so he became a successful man” (Genesis 39:2). Although we all have different talents and responsibilities, God is the one who is ultimately responsible for our success.

3. God controls promotion. “God is the Judge; He puts down one and exalts another” (Psalm 75:7). Your boss is not the one who controls whether you will be promoted. God controls promotions based not only on workers’ abilities but also on workers’ faithfulness to the tasks and responsibilities given to them and whether they were good stewards of the responsibilities God had given them.

“You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things” (Matthew 25:23). One of the major reasons people experience stress and frustration in their jobs is because they do not understand God’s part in work.

Employers responsibilities

Godly employers usually need to perform a balancing act. Employers are to love, serve, and encourage their employees, but they also are responsible to lead their employees and hold them accountable for the completion of their assigned tasks. According to God’s Word, employers have five primary responsibilities.

1. Serve employees. The basis for biblical leadership is servanthood. “Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant” (Matthew 20:26). Employers need to balance efforts to make a profit with an unselfish concern for their employees and treat their employees fairly and with dignity.

2. Communicate. “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them” (Genesis 11:6). When employer and employees are committed to accomplishing a particular task and there is good communication between them, nothing—within the will of God—will be impossible.

Communication is a two-way street. Employers not only need to speak to their employees, but they also need to listen to their employees with sensitive and understanding ears.

3. Hold employees accountable. Employers are responsible for the employees knowing what’s expected on the job. Employers need to regularly evaluate employees’ performance and communicate this to employees.

4. Pay a fair wage. “[The Lord will judge] those who oppress the wage earner in his wages” (Malachi 3:5). “You shall not oppress a hired servant….You shall give him his wages on his day before the sun sets” (Deuteronomy 24:14-15). Employers must pay fair wages promptly when they are due.

5. Pray to have godly employees. This is not a command; it is a principle. However, employers would be wise to pray that God would send them employees of like faith and belief. Although employers are forbidden to discriminate, based on religious belief, employees with like faith eliminate a lot of potential problems that might arise.

Employees responsibilities

The life of Daniel as recorded in the biblical book of Daniel illustrates eight characteristics that made him a good and godly employee. The following are those eight characteristics.

1. Work as if working for the Lord. We actually are serving the Lord in our work; we are not serving people. In essence, we work for the Lord. If employees know and believe this, slothfulness can be greatly diminished.

2. Work hard. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). In Scripture, hard work and diligence are encouraged; laziness is condemned. “He also who is slack in his work is brother to him who destroys” (Proverbs 18:9).

However, hard work must be balanced by other primary priorities of life: relationship with Christ, spouse, and family. If work interferes with any of these three relationships, you are working too much.

3. Be honest. Employees should not give cause for their employers to ever question or doubt their honesty.

4. Be faithful. Godly employees need to establish goals of being faithful and excellent in their work and work habits. Then they work hard to attain those goals.

5. Be a person of prayer. Godly employees are people of prayer. If employees do not pray daily regarding their work, the work will suffer.

6. Honour employer. Godly employees always honour their employers and those who have been placed in authority over them (1 Peter 2:18).

7. Honour fellow employees. Wherever there are employees there will inevitably be office politics. However, a godly employee will avoid backbiting and slanderous talk about other employees.

8. Verbalize his or her faith. Daniel verbalized his faith in God to those around him. Even so, godly employees will openly declare their faith on their own time and live their lives according to what is pleasing to the Lord and according to the principles of His Word.

Conclusion

The most important question people can ask every day is, ―For whom do I work? If the answer is anything or anyone other than the Lord, the biblical principles of work are not being applied. God’s Word has given some very direct principles concerning work that all Christians should know and observe.

Many try to make lots of money, others want to be famous, some want to have political power, some just want to be left alone and have a quiet place to do their own thing. But all of these fall short of being truly fulfilling. Living a fulfilled life is not achieved through self-fulfilment.

So let me ask you, whom are you serving?

Thank God for them, and serve your heart out. In the end, you will experience true self-fulfilment and the rewards of a life well lived.
